Following the WRC on the Web without distractions - Updated

10 November 2019

Since a couple of years, I'm closely following Thierry Neuville in the World Rally Championship. Live timings for every rally are available on the official wrc.com website. Unfortunately, this website is cluttered with ads and other irrelevant content (see screenshot below). This makes the experience of following a rally far from ideal.

Live timings on wrc.com

The cool thing about the Web however, is that the user has the power to decide how a webpage is rendered in the browser. This is made possible by the fact that website front-end code is build according to open standards: the HTML, CSS and Javascript which make up every website can be changed before it is rendered in the browser window. In the context of our wrc.com case, CSS is the most interesting of the 3 technologies, since it can be used to change what is shown on the webpage, just what we need to get rid of those annoying ads.

To change the CSS, we need a browser plugin called Stylebot. This tool allows us to add extra CSS code to any website and change its look 'n' feel (see screenshot below).

I created a simple set of CSS code which makes the available live timings much more digestible.

header, footer, div a img, p.ad, ul.livecenter-subnav, .logo_wrcplus, .box.cad, .box.w1.f, .driverbar, .epgBox.box.w1.f h3 span, .liveheader, .mCSB_scrollTools, .bigsize, .billboard, .footer-sponsors, .content > div:first-child {
    display: none;
}

.logo_wrc img {
    display: block;
}

nav {
    margin-top: 0;
}

nav .wrapper ul {
    width: 87%;
}

main {
    padding-top: 0;
}

#m_more_2 {
    right: auto;
}

#m_live-timing_2 {
    color: #8dc72d;
}

For the best result, these style rules should be applied to all live timing pages. This can be done by using the following URL pattern:

www.wrc.com/en/wrc/livetiming*

Stylebot settings

The screenshot below shows the result after applying the necessary CSS overrides: all unnecessary elements are hidden on the page. This includes sponsors, ads, promoted content, etc. All that is left is the actual live results.

A much better experience!

Caution: if the WRC decides to change the HTML output if its website, the CSS overrides above might stop working and need to be updated.

Update

Off course, the WRC has updated its website so all of the above does not apply anymore ? Fortunately, the update is for the better: there is much less clutter now when consulting live results (see screenshot below)! The new design for the website in general is a big step up. ?

Rally van Haspengouw 2019

23 February 2019

This weekend, I enjoyed the beautiful sunny weather in Haspengouw and watched some good rally action during the first round of the Belgian Rally Championship, the Rally van Haspengouw.

I visited the following Special Stages:

  • SS 6 - Neerlanden: a typical section in the Haspengouw, with wide open fields. After a long straight line, the drivers had to go full in the breaks to take a dusty left corner, followed by a long acceleration to top speed.
  • SS 8 - Horpmaal: after a passage through the village of Vechmaal, the race goes uphill through a twisty hollow road. When the drivers reach the top, there is a dirty left before continuing downhill to the village again. The second picture below gives a peak at the flat tire of Vincent Verschueren, causing him a delay on this stage of 38 seconds, dropping from 2nd to 4th place overall.
  • SS 9 - Gingelom: again, an open section between the local plantations. Before taking a wide right, the drivers go full in the breaks.
  • SS 12 - Horpmaal: famous twisty section through the village of Vechmaal (actually the township of "Heurne"). In this spectator point, cars come at you from many directions at once: front, left and back.

Some general observations:

  • The new VW Polo R5 is a really fast car, spectacular to watch! Although it's a fairly new car, the first and second place in this rally proves it's already fully competitive with the Skoda Fabia's.
  • It's a pity Patrick Snijers (61) went off during SS 2. I was interested to see if he could keep up with the young squads in a modern car. Let's see what the rest of the season brings.

Rallye du Condroz-Huy 2018

3 November 2018

I visited the Condroz rally again this year and shot some pictures of the action.

I went to Huy on Saturday morning with the goal to see as much of the top competitors as often as I could. Special Stages I visited:

  • SS 1 - Ben-Ahin: nice section at the Solières Abbey were the pilots went full in the breaks to take a quick left corner.
  • SS 3 - Strée-Yernée: passage in the village of Strée with a slippery chicane.
  • SS 5 - Bodegnée-Amay: very spectacular section in the open fields, with a tight muddy corner. Kris Meeke went off the road on this one, but I could not snap a picture since it was too crowded.
  • SS 6 - Ben-Ahin: famous section at Tienne aux Grives, giving a nice overview. This is the stage were Steve Matterne and Rik Vanlessen went off and hit an electricity pole. Sadly, Rik Vanlessen did not survive the accident. I snapped a picture of the team driving along (second last picture below, the green-red Skoda Fabia). The crash happened a couple of minutes later...
  • SS 8 -  Strée-Yernée: a tight left corner at Clémodeau, with a nice view from the top of the road (the blurry picture)
